Instructions
Our Kits are unique they are a very easy, simple 3 stage process.
First of all you will need to clean the leather thoroughly that's not being coloured before you match up your colour. If you are re colouring all your leather then there is no need to clean, just skip to the prep stage
Stage 1: - Prep it- The first step is to use the prep, this is designed to remove some of the old surface coating, the reason for doing this is its removing all old dirt, grease, waxes and oils from the surface and some of the old manufacturers finish, this then gives you a base to work from allowing the colourant to adhere correctly to the leathers surface. Without removing some of the colour, the new colour won’t bond correctly. You will also end up with a plastic looking finish and not a natural finish as the painted surface will become too thick and fill all the grain in. As a test the leather prep should be able to soak into the leather, if it does then this prep stages are done correctly.
Once the prep stages are completed any repairs that are required are to be carried out at this stage, repair tears, use fillers etc etc.
If you are using softening creme use at this stage before painting, apply plenty of softening creme and work into the leather, you can cover the leather with clingfilm to allow the creme to sweat into the leather. After softening is carried out, lightly wipe over the surface with prep to remove any excess softening creme from the surface.
Stage 2: - Colour It - The next stage is to colour the area to be repaired. The first coat wants to be wiped in, this initial coat isn't designed to cover at all, its designed to be a base coat, so if its patchy and streaky this is very normal. Next stipple on a coating using the sponge this time round it will almost re colour the leather fully. If you wanted to use a spray gun at this stage you can now start to spray on your colourant. Using 1200 grit sand paper lightly sand the surface to remove any imperfections between each coating of paint applied. Before you get to stage 3 clear coat sealer application very lightly sand with 1200 grit paper.
Stage 3: - Seal It - Once coloured, you then seal this over with the clear coat sealers (Gloss and Matt Finish) the gloss and matt finish can be mixed together to give you a satin finish if this is the desired look you require, this can be done by mixing them 50/50. But you can mix the clear coat lacquer sealers together at any rate.
Matt on its own is too matt, so if you require something that is a matt finish its suggested adding a small amount of gloss to just lift the very flat dead matt finish slightly. The sealers can be sponged on again or sprayed on if preferred, these require no thinning at all, they can all be sprayed as they are, if spraying its suggested to use a spray gun as mentioned below but spray at around 15psi. Three coats of clear coat sealer is required either sponged on or sprayed on.
Spraying On Colour
Due to how the colourant dyes are made some dyes are thicker than others, the best way to thin them is using a small amount of lacquer that comes with your colour repair kit. But you can add a small amount of water if you wish, do not put in too much water as this will affect the covering power of the colourant paint.
It's always best to apply the first coating using a sponge and then spray afterwards, do not spray from the start.
When adding water 10% should be sufficient
An airbrush type gun is best with a No5 needle spraying at around 20psi
Cleaning Out Spray Guns
Cleaning out spray guns is simple as products are water based, so you can wash the gun through with warm water or thinners if you wish.
